Importing a car from the UK to Cyprus: a practical checklist
A UK purchase can be attractive, but the headline price is only the start. Before paying a deposit, confirm the customs route, documents, tax treatment, registration eligibility and the costs outside tax.

1. Confirm the vehicle can be registered
Do this before bidding or paying a seller. Ask the Cyprus Department of Road Transport which restrictions, inspections and documents apply to the exact vehicle. A customs clearance calculation does not confirm that a vehicle can be registered or licensed for road use.
2. Build the customs-value file
Cyprus Customs says importers should be ready to show the purchase invoice, transport evidence and insurance evidence where applicable. For a used vehicle, the original registration certificate is also important. Keep these records aligned with the money paid and the vehicle identification number.
3. Treat duty as a question to prove, not an assumption
The EU–UK trade arrangements can offer preferential treatment where rules of origin and valid evidence are satisfied. Buying a car in the UK or seeing UK number plates is not, by itself, proof that it qualifies. If no preference applies, use the duty rate confirmed for the vehicle classification in TARIC or by Customs.
4. Check import VAT and reliefs
Cyprus Customs explains that import VAT is calculated on the taxable value made up of customs value plus import duty. A change of residence, temporary admission or another relief can have specific conditions. Do not apply a relief in a personal budget unless Customs has confirmed that you qualify.
5. Budget the costs after the border
- Collection, shipping and cargo insurance
- Customs declaration and clearance-agent fees
- Port handling or storage if clearance is delayed
- Inspection, conformity work and registration
- Repairs, tyres, servicing and an allowance for exchange-rate movement
Use a confirmed tax scenario in the full car import budget planner to keep these items visible alongside the purchase price.
Documents checklist
- Sales invoice or contract and evidence of payment
- Vehicle registration document and VIN details
- Bill of lading or other transport document
- Freight and insurance evidence
- Any origin statement or supporting origin evidence
- Documents requested for registration or conformity checks
Frequently asked questions
Does a UK-registered car automatically get zero duty?
No. Preferential treatment depends on the applicable origin rules and evidence. Confirm the vehicle’s position with Customs before selecting a zero-duty scenario.
Does the calculator include registration and agent fees?
No. The Cyprus tax calculator focuses on customs value, duty and import VAT. Add your confirmed local costs in the full budget planner.
Is temporary import the same as permanent import?
No. Temporary admission has its own residency, use and re-export conditions. It should not be used as a substitute for a permanent-import budget.
